Council, promise, and criticism
The external Science Advisory Council, led by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, requested more than 50 Pentagon videos, images, and documents and brought together expertise in astrophysics, data science, psychology, oceanography, biology, and critical skepticism. Supporters emphasised physics-based analysis, better collection, independent scientific involvement, and dedicated public research funding.
Critics including astrophysicist Steve Desch and former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick questioned Loeb’s methods, national-security experience, and the council’s composition, noting his earlier extraterrestrial interpretations before broad peer-reviewed agreement. Loeb stated that the inquiry would begin with human technology and national-security explanations rather than assume an extraterrestrial origin.
